DEAW Kindergarten Readiness Orientation

First, we have scheduled an orientation for all incoming kindergarten students and their parents/guardians on Monday, June 18 2018 at 9:00 a.m. in the cafeteria. Each parent will receive a Kindergarten Readiness packet to help your child get a head start on some necessary skills. The packet is designed to help you and your child practice many of the skills needed to know early on in kindergarten. The goal is for your child to do a half of a page a day over the summer months. You or your child can mark off completion on the calendar provided. Do not be discouraged if your child has trouble with certain skills. Some skills cannot be mastered in a day. You may want to mark those skills and revisit them each week. We will reinforce these skills after your child enters kindergarten.

Lastly, we will be conducting a screening of all incoming kindergarten students between August 14-16, 2018 from 8:45-11:45 a.m. You can expect a call from our office team in mid-July to schedule your appointment. During the screening, we will be assessing your child on Mathematics Early Numeracy (counting, computation, number identification, etc.) and Reading Early Literacy (Phonological Awareness, Letter Identification).
Have fun with the packet and be sure to praise your child for any attempt to learn these skills. Any practice will be beneficial. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Yours in Education,
