School uniforms
Students are expected to be in complete uniform daily unless otherwise indicated for school approved occasions. Effective Monday, November 6, 2017 our young ladies were permitted to begin wearing relaxed fit navy slacks thru March 2018.

David Ellis Academy West strives to provide safe, secure and bully-free learning environment for all students within our building, on school grounds, buses during field trips and at school-sponsored activities.

David Ellis Academy West currently holds uniform policy. This policy is in place to provide a distraction-free environment that is conducive to learning. Every student is expected to wear their school uniform and acceptable shoes, no exceptions.

1st Uniform violation - Student will receive a reminder letter. The parent will receive a note notifying them of the uniform violation, this note along with a parent signature must be returned the next day.

2nd Uniform violation -Parent will be called and are expected to bring their child’s uniform to school.  The child will be waiting in the Student Service Center until the parent arrives.

3rd Uniform violation –Parents are again expected to bring their child’s uniform to school and the student will spend the entire day completing school work in the Student Service Center.

Any additional violations may require but are not limited to a meeting with an administrator. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Students dressed out of uniform will be asked to call home for a change of clothes.

School Safety
In order to maintain a safe and secure environment, all parents and visitors must enter the building via the Pembroke lobby and sign in with the office staff.  Parents requesting to speak with a teacher or staff member must have an appointment.

Please feel free to call or email your child's teacher to schedule an appointment.
David Ellis Academy West is pleased to announce that we will begin using the Raptor Visitor Management System to build on the academy’s program of campus safety for students and faculty.  Part of keeping students and faculty safe is knowing who is in our building at all times and the Raptor system will allow us to do that.  The Raptor system will better allow us to track visitors, contractors, and volunteers in our schools and provide us with a safer environment for our students and staff.

Upon entering a district building, visitors will now be asked to present a valid state-issued ID, which will be scanned into the system.  The Raptor system will check to ensure that registered sexual offenders are not entering our buildings.  It is important to note that the Raptor system only scans the visitor's name, date of birth and photo for comparison with a national database of registered sex offenders.  Additional visitor data from the driver's license is NOT gathered nor is the system connected to any other system such as the Secretary of State. Therefore, any other information on the ID is not scanned by the system and is not accessible to any of the school’s users.  Once entry is approved, Raptor will issue a badge that identifies the visitor, the date, and the purpose of his/her visit.

A visitor’s badge will not be necessary for those who visit our schools simply to drop off an item in the office or pick up paperwork.  In the event that a person does not have identification, he/she can still be given access to the building, but will be escorted by a school staff member.

If you are interested in learning more about the Raptor visitor management system, please visit the Raptor Technologies website www.raptortech.com If you have any questions for the district personnel, please contact Mr. Hurd at 313-450-0300 or via email [email protected]

The safety of our students is our highest priority and the Raptor visitor management system provides a consistent way to aid in keeping away people who may present a danger to our students. Therefore, all visitors to the school must be scanned into the system and obtain a visitor badge.  Thank you, in advance, for your understanding and support of enhancing school safety protocols in our district.

Parents please be reminded, students must arrive to school on time. School begins promptly at 7:50 a.m. Students arriving at 8:00 a.m. or after are marked tardy and must be signed in. Early check outs, tardies and late pick ups are recorded and will be reported to the Wayne County Prosecutor's office (ERASE Truancy program). Please note if your child has accumulated five (5) or more absences, tardies, late pick-ups or early check outs, attendance letters will be sent to the Wayne County Prosecutor's office on an ongoing basis.
Thank you for your support and cooperation.

Enjoy the rest of your day.
“One small POSITIVE THOUGHT can change your entire day!”
Sincerely,
Mr. Tyron D. Hurd
